Raising Kids with Character with Monica Swanson
Intentional Parenting
One of the many parenting tips we always hear about is to be intentional. And that is because it’s important to set goals in parenting, rather than just constantly putting out fires. Being intentional means having the vision of what traits/values/characteristics we want for our kids. It is also reflecting on things like, how do we want to send them out into the world? What habits do they need? What values could they have in order to thrive as well as be kind? And so on…
As parenting coach Monica said, “a kid who behaves well can get you through a dinner party but it won’t get him through life.” That means our primary purpose for correcting the behavior of our children is to teach them certain values (ex: being considerate of other people), and not because we are afraid of other people’s judgment. So telling our kids the reason why they should behave or do things in a certain way is important.
But again, so much of parenting and character influence starts with connection. Building a good relationship with our kids is fundamental in teaching them values, and in overall parenting.
