Hot Mess Mom to Mindful Mom – How does it work?

We think that being a good mom means we are a martyr. But then the kids get an overwhelmed, exhausted, depleted mom. If you take a few minutes a day for yourself, like even just 10 or less, it makes a huge difference. Then you can be a more joyful, fun, present mom! A better wife, better sister, better everything!

How do you get out of this feeling of being a hot mess?

Self care doesn’t mean that you have to overhaul your life all at once. Choose one small action and do it consistently. Do one small thing, for just a few minutes every day and it will make a huge difference. Can you spend one minute a day on yourself consistently? Can you eat one healthy snack or meal a day? Can you drink one full bottle of water every day? Just pick one little thing and do it consistently. Anything worth it takes time. Give it a chance to work.

Once you get the momentum going you can add in another step, and then another, and then another. How to Go From Hot Mess Mom to Mindful Mom with Ali Katz

What are some ways you can invest in yourself?

  • Know what brings you back to center when you get overwhelmed
  • Learning something fun
  • Respect a schedule
  • Bite size entry in your journal
  • Say no to drama
  • Stress gratitude list – make two columns on a piece of paper, label them “stress” and “gratitude”, put on some music, make a list of everything stressing you out, then make a list of everything you are grateful for but it has to be twice as much as your stress side
  • Learn to laugh at yourself
  • Forgive yourself and others
  • Be honest about the amount of time things take, giving yourself the right amount of time is an act of self-care
  • And so much more!

How do you find out what works for you?

Don’t be afraid to try something, work at it for at least 2 weeks. Though everyone should do mediation every day for 2-3 minutes.

You don’t have to force yourself to do something you don’t enjoy. Find something you like doing so you want to do it!

It’s okay to try something different if one thing doesn’t work.

Meditation

Don’t be scared and let go of expectations. You don’t have to close your eyes and clear your mind. You will have thoughts, that’s okay. When you meditate it’s your job to come back to whatever your focus is. Your breath, your mantra, your body or whatever you are using. No matter how many times you have to come back you are doing it right. That IS the process. It doesn’t have to be complicated. If you can breathe you can meditate.

There are so many amazing benefits of meditating consistently. You become less reactive and more responsive, more compassion for yourself and others, stronger immune system, better sleep, regulated digestive patterns, less chronic pain and PMS, feeling more confident and connected to your intuition. So when you learn how to focus and come back, you learn how to focus better outside of meditation. Everything gets better and it positively affects those around you too!

We set the tone in our home. If we are a balled up mess of anxiety and stress our kids feel that. But if we are relaxed and present our kids feel that too!

It’s always about progress, not perfection.

Final thoughts

Start with something small and make it happen. You can talk about change but thinking about it and talking about it is harder than doing it. So pick one small thing and just get started. It will feel amazing!
