The 7 Habits You Need to Have with Kinsley Fieck

My daughter Kinsley had really really wanted to have an episode in my podcast. And now I am super excited to finally have this episode with her. I asked Kinsley to share with us something POWERFUL that she has been learning and practicing in her school and at home.

I haven’t delved much into the book, but as I see my kid started to integrate the lessons into her life, I truly believe that we adults need to take note of this as well. Here are Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:

Habit No.1: Be Proactive

Be in charge of yourself. Take the initiative. Someone else cannot be the boss of you, because you are the boss of you. Kinsley says that it could be the simple initiative of washing the dishes even if we don’t ask them (the kids) too. For us moms, it could be doing some exercises in the morning!

Habit No. 2: Begin With an End in Mind

That means to have a plan. We should all remember this when it comes to manifesting our goals and visions. If you have a plan, you could work on that plan, and when you’re done, you can find a new plan and work at it!

“Get the more important things done so you don’t have to worry about them.” – Kinsley

Habit No. 3: Put First Things First

That means work before you play. For our kids, it could be how they should do their homework first before they can play. It is a matter of managing what’s most important to you FIRST, then the less important things could follow. Get the more important things done so you don’t have to worry about them later on.

Habit No. 4: Think Win-Win

This means EVERYONE can win. This is an important reminder for all of us. For example, when we argue with our kids, it is finding the solutions that work with both the disagreements. And how do we do that? Both sides should strive to work together. You could find solutions by listening to each other’s ideas and then integrate them.

Habit No. 5: Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood

Listen before you talk. Let the other person say what they’re thinking before you. And Kinsley does this by giving her full attention. All eyes and ears on the person talking so you won’t get distracted!

Habit No. 6: Synergize

Together is better. This applies when you are working with somebody. It would be better to have brains together than one brain only making the effort. Because one brain has less ideas, and less great ideas than two brains together. Thus, it is better that we ask for other people’s ideas or feedback when working on a project.

Habit No. 7: Sharpen the Saw

Balance feels best. It looks like how your kid takes a break after getting tired of playing by an hour or so. Even in the midst of an important activity, it is important to take rests and recharge (Check out Finding Rest as a Doer if taking rest isn’t easy for you.) And by sharpening one’s saw we also mean making a plan and sticking to it. Here are a few reminders to take good care of ourselves to get that balance in all areas of our lives.

  • Get enough sleep so your body have enough energy to go to work.
  • Eat different kinds of healthy foods. (Kinsley’s favorite activity to sharpen herself)
  • Exercise
  • Spend more time with your family
  • Meditate and pray

By following these seven habits, we don’t just improve our productivity, focus, and lessen our worries. Kinsley tells us that it also helps us become nicer, kinder, and respectful towards other people.

Remember…

I think if we want to change the course of the next generation, this is one way to do so. We can implement this and help empower our kids to take care of themselves and the people around them. To think about what really are their priorities, goals, and dreams are, and to take action towards those.
